Romania’s bank deposits annual growth grew in March, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) said on Thursday (April 27) in its monthly monetary statistics report.
The deposits of the non-government sector in local lenders increased by 9.5% last month y-o-y, to 524.4 billion lei (106.1 billion euro), after rising 8.5% in February. Romanian leu deposits went up by 17.8%, reaching 347.4 billion lei, while foreign currency deposits decreased by 4.1% y-o-y to 172.7 billion lei in March.
Meanwhile, loans to non-government sector granted by credit institutions advanced 1.3% in March from February 2023 to RON 370,493.5 million. RON-denominated loans, representing 67.8% of total volume of loans to non-government sector, rose by 0.4%, whilst foreign currency-denominated loans, holding 32.2% of total loans to non-government sector, grew by 3.1% when expressed in RON (2.4% when expressed in EUR).
In year-on-year comparison, loans to non-government sector advanced 10.2%, on the back of the 2.7% increase in RON-denominated loans and the 30.2% rise in foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON (similar evolution when expressed in EUR).
Credit to general government increased by 2.8% in March 2023 from the previous month, to RON 179,425.0 million. In year-on-year comparison, this indicator expanded by 9.4%.
Broad money (M3) amounted to RON 613,957.0 million, up 0.3% (down 0.7% in real terms) month on month. In year-on-year comparison, broad money rose by 8.2% (down 5.5% in real terms).
